Vic: Police murder jury enters 5th day of deliberations

MELBOURNE, Dec 28 AAP - A Victorian Supreme Court jury considering verdicts in thetrial of two men accused of a double police slaying today began a fifth day of deliberations.

Bandali Michael Debs, 49, of Narre Warren and Jason Joseph Roberts, 22, of Cranbourne,have pleaded not guilty to the murders of Sergeant Gary Silk, 35, and Senior ConstableRod Miller, 34.

The officers were gunned down on August 16, 1998, during a surveillance operation setup to capture two men believed responsible for a series of armed robberies in Melbourne'ssoutheast.

They were shot after pulling over a suspect car just after midnight during a stakeoutof a Chinese restaurant in Moorabbin.

The crown alleges Debs and Roberts were also responsible for the armed robberies. Bothmen deny any involvement in them.

Debs and Roberts, who did not give evidence, stated through their barrister that theywere not at the scene of the shootings.

The seven women and five men jury retired on Monday morning at the end of a trial whichbegan on August 14.

They were allowed to break off at noon on December 24 until Boxing Day to spend Christmaswith their families.
