QLD: Gold Coast building applications up

GOLD COAST, Dec 28 AAP - The Gold Coast building industry maintained its momentum during
1998 with applications received by the Gold Coast City Council hitting a three-year high.

Approvals were up about $70 million on last year, a council spokesman said today.

He said more than 11,600 applications were expected to be received by the end of the year,
which would be 750 more than in 1997.

The spokesman said up to Christmas, council had processed more than 9,000 approvals -
excluding private certification - worth more than $933 million which was almost $70 million
more than in 1997.

"Fifty-six of this year's approvals were worth more than $1 million. Six approvals in June
alone were worth a combined total of $70 million," the spokesman said in a statement.

"This would indicate a continuing confidence in the Gold Coast as a residential and visitor
destination."
